Updated ORA Rankings
The team from Griffith Park YMCA cruised to a landslide victory in the 2005 ORA Club Challenge, held last weekend in Portland.
Griffith Park YMCA finished with 1,162 points, followed by Cascade with 1007. Eastside was third with 972 points. In fourth place was Sunset with 928 points and the defending champs from Courthouse finished fifth with 860 points. Courtsports from Eugene earned 620 points.
Teams earn points through round robin play in 19 singles and doubles skill divisions. The number of points a player earns on the court is added to their team's total score.
Two additional bonus points are awarded for winning the game and one more bonus point if the opponent's score is less than 7 points.
The 2004-2005 ORA Tour came to a close Sunday with the State Championships at Lloyd Athletic Club in Portland.
In the Women's Open division, Ashley Leggett held off season point leader Tina Fortin. Leggett won two of the four events she entered this season, staking her claim as the top women's player in the state.
The Men's Open final provided one of the best final matches in recent years. After winning the first game, Chadd Westwood went up 9-0 over John Wetherbee in the second game and seemed on his way to an easy win. The lead even prompted event organizers to bring down the Widmer Cup, presented annually to the Men's Open State Champion, in preparation for a photo opp after the match. But then Wetherbee’s amazing comeback was on, tying the second game at 12 and eventually winning 15-14. In the tiebreaker, the two fought back and forth until a 10-10 tie. After five changes of serve, Westwood’s pinch cracked just far enough out of Wetherbee’s reach. Westwood brought home the State Championship and finished the season as the top-ranked men’s player in Oregon.
Results and finishers for all divisions can be found here.
The season ending rankings have also been updated and can be accessed through the “Rankings“ tab above.
Come Sunday afternoon, the 2004-2005 Oregon State Champions will be crowned!
