Congratulations to defending national champions Sprague High School! Sprague captured the Overall Team trophy at the USA Racquetball National High School Championships Feb. 25 through March 1 in St. Louis. This is the third time in 22 years the Sprague Olympians have won the national Overall Team award, having previously received the honor in 2008 and 1998.
Beaverton High School earned the third-place trophy in the Overall Team contest. Sprague and La Salle High School finished second and third, respectively, in the Boys’ Team championships.
Taylor Knoth, a senior at La Salle High School, earned an unprecedented three national championships in Boys’ #1 Gold Singles, Boys’ #1 Gold Doubles (with partner Jeremy McGlothin) and Mixed #1 Doubles (with partner Ashley Sheldon). Taylor’s three-pack of gold medals marks the first time in USAR history that the same player has won all three #1 Gold divisions. He also earned a spot on the U.S. Junior National Team, which competes and represents Team USA at all international racquetball competitions. McGlothin, with his Boys’ #1 Gold Doubles victory, also earned a spot on the national team.
Amanda Lindsay, a junior at Oregon City High School, had a second-place finish in Girls’ #1 Gold Singles. She and partner Rick Charbonneau earned the silver medal in Mixed #1 Gold Doubles. Dylan Reid from Lincoln High School finished second in Boys’ #1 Gold Singles, and he and partner Sam Reid earned the silver medal in Boys’ #1 Gold Doubles.
Other top finishers in #1 Gold divisions include Westview’s Erick Podwill (fourth in Boys’ Singles) and Oregon City’s Rick and Ryan Charbonneau (third in Boys’ Doubles). It was an all-Oregon podium for Mixed #1 Gold Doubles as Lincoln’s Dylan Reid and Hayley Gutzler finished third, and Sprague’s Ryan Schoonmaker and Karin Foster placed fourth.
One hundred students from nine high schools represented Oregon in the national tournament, and they continued to showcase the remarkable talent found in the OHSRL. Of the 84 medals awarded, Oregon earned an impressive 41.
